About Ms. Smith
Greetings,
Welcome to Ms. Smith’s Music Room! It is with joy and great pleasure to have the honor and privilege of being a music teacher. I teach music because I want to enhance student’s creativity, unlock their self-expression and intelligence and help them become lifelong learners, consumers, and advocates of music and the arts. Music is my passion, my calling and purpose for living.
I have been an elementary music teacher for 33 years and have taught at Sheridan Elementary and Brookdale / Nix Elementary for 22 years. I have five incredible adult children and two grandsons. Music became a part of my life at an early age. I sang solos as early as 5 years old and began playing the piano at age 7. In middle school, I made the decision that I wanted a career as a music teacher. I graduated with honors in high school and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from South Carolina State University and a Master of Education degree in Educational Administration from Cambridge College. I am active in the community and I am the Minister of Music at my church.
I believe that music has to be a major part of our lives. It is deeply imbedded in our existence and contributes in important ways to our quality of life. Music is one of the primary ways we learn about ourselves, others, actions and consequences, traditions and beliefs, and is one of the fundamental ways human beings create and communicate meanings.
Children and music are made to be loved and are the joys of my life. It is my endeavor to discover the gift in every child and help them develop and maintain an appreciation towards music now and in the future. I will do my best to nurture and guide my students in this musical experience. I look forward to our music adventure together. WE ARE ONE!
Musically yours,
Ms. Gwendolyn Smith
